We strive to get the ‘nub’ of things quickly, advise our clients exactly where they stand and what to expect, and most importantly that we have their back. We have the experience, skill and confidence to accept and deal with every challenge coming our way. Jeanne and Jonathan have worked together since 2010 and are a formidable combination.

Jeanne Heatlie

Jeanne is passionate about her clients and ensuring they get the best outcomes possible. She is a skilled litigator with many years of experience both in New Zealand and abroad. Jeanne was admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa in 1996 and was a partner at a leading law firm in Cape Town before relocating to Auckland in 2007. Jeanne is also a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand.

Jeanne has extensive experience in insolvency related matters where she has represented liquidators and creditors in a number of high profile cases. She has been involved in investigations of large scale corporate collapses and the prosecution of claims for the recovery of assets. She has acted on claims against former directors for reckless trading and against auditors for breaches of professional duties. She has experience in a number of foreign jurisdictions, including South Africa, United Kingdom, Malta, the Island of Jersey and Namibia. Jeanne has in the past been a member of the technical committee for the World Insolvency Conference.

Jeanne has represented both Body Corporates and homeowners in building defect and weathertightness cases. She was an integral part of the Rainey Law team on the Nautilus litigation which resulted in the largest award made in a defective building case to date.

Jeanne provides advice on all related issues, including schemes of repair and escrow arrangments. Jeanne has represented clients in several other litigation matters, involving general commercial litigation, fraud investigations and asset recovery.

Jeanne is a member of RITANZ (Restructuring Insolvency & Turnaround Association of New Zealand) and AWLA (Auckland Women Lawyers’ Association).

Jonathan Wood

Jonathan specialises in commercial law. He gained his law degree at the University of London in 2005, followed by a masters degree from the University of Auckland specialising in commercial law.

He has been part of the team since 2010.

Jonathan has an innovative approach to addressing clients’ needs with a cost effective, high level of representation. He takes pride in his quality service to clients based on excellence and responsiveness, backed up by strong legal skills. Jonathan’s skill set includes creative problem solving and the acumen to advance clients’ goals whilst protecting their interests.

His areas of speciality include advising clients and running cases involving Building Act, Unit Titles Act and property law issues. He also has a particular interest in judicial review and appeal work.

Jonathan has succesfully argued appeals as counsel in the District and High Courts and as junior counsel in the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, He has appeared on behalf of Body Corporates applying for schemes of repair in the High Court and in opposition to schemes of behalf of minority owner clients.

He is regularly consulted by Body Corporates and Body Corporate managers to guide and advise them on the intricacies of the Unit Titles Act, of which he has an expert knowledge.
